The AOL Online Accounting Forum Has Been Discontinued
(ContentDesk) July 7, 2005 -- The trademark slogan "You have mail" helped push America On-Line to be the largest commercial Internet Service Provider this nation had ever seen. A dot-com that made it through the Technology bubble burst only to fall into the hands of a brick and mortar publisher of news and books. A part of that success was its volunteer force called Community Leaders who either founded their individual forums or became its leader and recruited from similar interested individuals to help growth the forum.I had, back in March 1996, the rare opportunity to develop a forum for the accounting professionals throughout the world to come and discuss issues that we all faced. A place where the underemployed or unemployed professional accountants could gather and network with each other in obtaining a new position. And a discussion or message board area where the small CPA firms could gather and get information on how to market their services.I also provided a spot where those with writing ability could publish their thoughts or business cases for others to learn from or discuss with messages and during discussion room sessions.During the next several years we had numerous small to medium sized business owners who came into the forum seeking advice on Federal, State, Local, Sales and Use Taxes, Property and Personal Property Taxes and other needs.
They also came in to get an understanding on how to get Quick Books and Peachtree accounting systems to work correctly. During those sessions we taught them, using a wallet style method, what accounting really was and what it meant to take cash from the cash account (wallet) and spend it on other things. We discussed payroll, pensions, and accounting for numerous other items and suggested that they obtain the services of local bookkeepers or CPAs to insure they were within the regulations of the state and local governments. How to recognize revenue using different approaches, and how to account for different compensation (Stock Options) were a few of the interesting discussions.The we, stated above, were the accounting professionals who came to get an understanding of what the small to medium sized businessperson wanted, and those accounting professionals came from the global community. We had Chartered Accountants from the UK and Australia, Accountants from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the European Communities, and the Pacific Eastern Rim.
We had Accountants from the Philippines, Somalia and other island nations. There were CPAs, CMAs, CFMs, CIAs, CFEs, and numerous other certified professionals from almost every free nation that allowed the use of the Internet to communicate. We discussed issues concerning financial reporting in each and learned from each other about different approaches. I also provided classes with world-recognized experts on different cost methods.????On June 8, 2005 it all ended. AOL decided that they no longer needed the community leaders anymore nor did it need an accounting forum that was not tied directly with an employment shop that sponsored Career Builders approaches.
And I will no longer hear those magical words again of "You Have Forum Mail.".
